Stephen TowneStephen E. Towne is Associate University Archivist at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). Prior to that, he worked at the Indiana State Archives for 11 years. He has written a number of articles on the American Civil War pertaining to the suppression of the press and military arrests of civilians in the North. He has edited A Fierce, Wild Joy: The Civil War Letters of Colonel Edward J. Wood, 48th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment (2007) and with Richard F. Nation co-edited Indiana's War: The Civil War in Documents (2009). He is currently working on a book manuscript to show how military commanders in the Old Northwest developed military intelligence networks to detect and counteract secret organizations.
