Project Staff
Pat Wilson—Project Director
Ms. Wilson was a 2007 recipient of the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) Outstanding Secondary Teacher of the Year award. She is the Chair of the social studies department at Bloomington High School North, and a senior, lead teacher in the MCCSC district. Ms. Wilson also teaches “Methods of Teaching Secondary Social Studies” as an adjunct instructor in the IU School of Education. For the TAH project, she will recruit teachers, coordinate project activities, and teach workshops. Ms. Wilson also will serve as a consultant for teachers, reviewing lesson development.
Connie Ables—Project Assistant
Ms. Ables was a recipient of the 2008–09 Armstrong Teacher Educator Award and has been an AP U.S. History Exam Reader for the past two years. Ms. Ables is a veteran teacher of 19 years in the public school systems in Indiana. She recently taught AP U.S. History, U.S History, Sociology, and Current Issues at the high school level as well as H105 and H106 through the ACP program at IU. Ms. Ables is presently a 2nd year Ph.D. student in the IU School of Education with a concentration in Curriculum and Instruction. She was previously involved with two Teaching American History projects as a teacher.
Dr. Lynne Boyle-Baise—Project Director for the School of Education, Indiana University
Dr. Boyle-Baise, Professor of Education at Indiana University, is a 2006 recipient of the Trustee’s Teaching Award (IUB) and 2005 recipient of the Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Award for her work on the Banneker History Project. Dr. Boyle-Baise recently published Young Citizens of the World: Teaching Elementary Social Studies through Civic Engagement. She will coordinate TAH project activities, teach workshops, and write grant reports. Dr. Boyle-Baise also will serve as a consultant for teachers, reviewing lesson development.
Dr. James Madison—Project Director for the College of Arts and Sciences (COAS) Department of History, Indiana University
Dr. Madison, Thomas and Kathryn Miller Professor of History, Indiana University, is former chair of the History Department and recipient of the Holland Teaching Award. His book, The Indiana Way, is the standard one-volume history of the state. He is former editor of the Indiana Magazine of History. He will coordinate the work of historians, as well as offer workshops for the TAH project. Dr. Madison will serve as a consultant for teachers, reviewing lesson development.
Dr. Elizabeth Oyer—Project Evaluator
Since 1995, Dr. Oyer, Director of Evaluation Solutions, has managed large-scale, multi-site initiatives in Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky utilizing a variety of sophisticated statistical analysis strategies. Since 2001, she has acted as the primary evaluator for five Teaching American History grants.
Dr. Glenda Murray—Project Director for the Monroe County History Center
Dr. Murray is the Program Associate at the Poynter Center for the Study of Ethics and American Institutions—an IU research center. She also currently serves as President of the Monroe County Historical Society. Dr. Murray holds a Ph.D. in History. She will coordinate TAH project activities at the Monroe County History Center; assist teachers with utilization of its resources, and teach project workshops.
Ms. Elaine Larson—Web Site Development
Ms. Larson is the Director of Education for the Agency for Instructional Technology (AIT). In that position she serves as a consultant to the Center on Congress at Indiana University, developing web resources and coordinating the Teaching with Primary Sources project. Ms. Larson is coordinating the development of the History Educators Project website and will present a seminar for project participants on accessing and using primary source materials.
